Dr. Norman Saffra is a nationally recognized expert in ophthalmic laser and microsurgery, specializing in diseases of the optic nerve, retina, and vitreous. He has extensive experience treating diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, uveitis, and eye complications of systemic illnesses.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of leading professional societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and The Retina Society. Dr. Saffra lectures widely, has published in major scientific journals, holds multiple patents, and consults for the FDA Ophthalmic Devices Panel.

As the head of The Eye Institute at Maimonides Medical Center, he leads clinical care and research in diseases causing vision loss. He also serves on staff at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, and has been listed in New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors” for 19 consecutive years.
